Congratulations to Helen on Aries for being named our July yard of the month!
Helen's drought tolerant front yard truly is a thing of beauty. While designing the yard back in 2018 with her gardener and landscaper, Helen expressed it was important to that many of the plants be drought tolerant and indigenous to the area. She wanted to bring a little bit of the Santa Monica mountains to her doorstep and boy did they deliver!
Sage, Salvia, Echeveria, and other hearty succulents are intermingled with Rose bushes and Iris to create this lawn that is the perfect balance of both wild and curated.
While on the search for native plants, Helen found two local nurseries that specialize in California plants. The Theodore Payne Nursery in Sun Valley and Matilija Nursery in Moorpark both provided a wealth of knowledge and plants perfect for the job!
Helen credits her long time gardener Ignacio Soto with keeping her yard in tip top shape. Amazingly, he uses only all natural fertilizer and environmentally conscious products. But how does he keep the weeds at bay, you ask? Good question. Did you know cardboard is an effective weed deterrent? Who knew! Ignacio. Ignacio knew. He laid thick cardboard down across the lawn before laying out and planting the garden. It has been effective, and even years later weeds nary appear.
This yard is beautiful year round, but April through May it is especially spectacular. Big thank you to Helen for sharing it with us all!
